On the view of avoiding ID proof fraud cases, Kerala police call for a meeting of company chiefs to check misuse Identity proofs submitted by customers at the time of SIM card purchase.

Police have nabbed some executives working for telecom operators for some recent fraudulent cased registered with kerala police.

Delhi High Court Removes 200 SMS per day limit : Enjoy SMSing

The Delhi High Court today set aside the cap of 200 SMSes per day sent through a mobile phone SIM for personal communications but upheld the curb on unwanted commercial SMSes saying they infringed the "equally" important right to privacy of "unwilling recipients."
"We are, therefore, of the opinion that the impugned provision (of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) insofar as it covers non-UCCs (Unrestricted Unsolicited Commercial Communications) SMS in the present form as it exists, infringes the freedom of speech of the citizens.

"And the conditions imposed upon the freedom of speech is not reasonable which would be protected under Article 19 (2) (which deals with reasonable restrictions of freedom of speech) of the Constitution," a bench of Acting Chief Justice A K Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said.

Mobile tariffs set to rise on TRAI recommendations

Telecom regulator TRAI is likely to revise upwards the impact its proposed minimum price for sale of spectrum will have on mobile telephone tariffs.

In a meeting with consumer groups today, TRAI Chairman Rahul Khullar said, "It is not 1 paisa or 2 paise (increase) ... but also not 16 paise or 25 paise as projected by operators."

The minimum price of airwaves proposed by TRAI for pan-Indian operations is over Rs 18,000 crore, around 10 times more than the amount paid by old operators.

BSNL introduces new prepaid CDMA data packs

State run telecom PSU BSNL has come out with new special tariff vouchers under CDMA data services. BSNL has introduced four new data vouchers for its customers in South Zone circles . BSNL customers can now enjoy 1GB free data usage for just Rs 50 with 30 days validity. Similarly Rs 150 CDMA data coupon offers 3.5 GB free data usage with validity of 90 days. Unlimited data usage plan comes at Rs 390 with 30 days validity. Data pack of Rs 85 has been designed to reduce the data charge to 20p/MB for a period of 90 days. But the applicability of these coupons varies as they are applicable to specific segments of customers under CDMA services. These coupons will be available from 18th July’12 in South Zone circles.

TRAI Issues Quality of 2G, 3G and 4G Mobile Internet Service Standards

Now, there seems to be good news for all the 2G, 3G and 4G Mobile Internet users, India’s telecom watchdog Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today issued guidelines on Minimum Quality Benchmark for Mobile Internet services – GPRS, 2G and 3G / EVDO and 4G Data service.
With the new regulation – “Standards of Quality of Service for Mobile Data Services Regulations, 2012” TRAI will monitor Quality of Mobile Internet service on nine parameters, including Minimum Download Speed, Successful Data transmission Download and Upload Attempts, Latency – the amount of time taken by a packet to reach the receiving endpoint after being transmitted from the sending endpoint etc.
The TRAI has also recommended that all Mobile Internet Service providers should activate Mobile Internet (GPRS/3G/4G/CDMA – EVDO) within 3 hours of the customer requesting for it, with a 95% success rate.

Huawei redeploys over 300 Indian workers in global operations

NEW DELHI: Equipment maker Huawei India today said it has shifted over 300 Indian employees to manage global operations from its India centre due to downturn in the domestic telecom sector amid policy uncertainty.

Due to the "downturn in the telecom sector here following policy uncertainty, the company has redeployed 300 Indian workforce to service foreign operations from here", the company said.

The move will help curb the attrition rate in the company, Huawei that employs over 6,000 people in India said.

"Despite current downturn in the telecom industry, Huawei remains confident in Indian market. We are reposing our faith in Indian employees and have been minimising the impact of restructuring by providing global deployment opportunities and redeployment assistance," Huawei India CEO Cai Liquin told PTI.

Maxis set to exit India: In talks to sell Aircel

NEW DELHI: Maxis Berhad has held preliminary discussions to sell its Indian unit, Aircel, with bankers representing Russia's Sistema as Malaysia's largest telecom operator 'listens to offers' because of regulatory uncertainty and the probe against its founder T Ananda Krishnan and other top officials for alleged involvement in a telecom scandal in India.
"Maxis sees itself as a long-term player in India, but will listen to offers, in the wake of regulatory and policy uncertainty. Bankers have brought many potential permutations and combinations for mergers and strategic alliances, including that of Sistema, to the company. The Malaysian company has held a few rounds of discussions with bankers representing Sistema. But the discussions could be considered serious only if they reach a stage where the potential suitor begins a due diligence of Aircel's accounts," said an executive close to Maxis with direct knowledge of the discussions.

MTS India revamps MBlaze plans in Mumbai, Maharashtra & Goa

Mobile operator MTS India has overhauled its MBlaze plans in the Maharashtra and Goa circle and the Mumbai circle. The Sachet Pack is priced at INR 96 and comes with 1 GB of data valid for one day, versus 0.5 GB previously. MTS also offers two monthly packs, one at INR 248 with 1 GB of data (up from 350 previously) and a new pack priced at INR 490 for 3 GB. The operator also launched a new 60-day pack at INR 698 with 4 GB of data, doubled the data of the INR 998 pack to 6 GB, and added a new 15 GB pack for INR 1,499 valid for ninety days.

Govt drawing up plans to make BSNL more professional: Sachin Pilot

CHENNAI: The government is drawing up plans to make loss-making BSNL more professional, Minister of State for IT and Telecommunications Sachin Pilot said today.

"Yes...think few (telecom) circles have shown some reversal in loss making. We still have lot of hard work ahead of us. We are drawing up plans on how to use our assets, to get more partnerships and to get joint ventures and (come into) revenue streams," he told reporters here.

Observing that the "landline" (fixed line) business was not generating enough profits, he said, "(besides that) we have a huge employee base and the Sixth Pay Commission burden is also on the department (of Telecom) and BSNL."

Former Nokia employees to launch MeeGo smartphone

HELSINKI: A Finnish startup, formed by former Nokia employees and using technology ditched by the handset maker, plans to launch its first smartphone later this year, entering an already crowded market.

The startup, Jolla, will use MeeGo software, created by Nokia and Intel in 2010-2011, for its products.

Linux-based MeeGo has found use in netbooks and car infotainment systems, but so far has been deployed in just one smartphone model, the Nokia N9.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the largest State owned Telecom operator, has announced the launch of a 3G Wi-Fi Pocket Router in a reverse bundling scheme with Shyam Networks. Dubbed as Winknet MF50, this Wi-Fi Router is similar to the ones launched by Tata Docomo and Vodafone.
Winknet MF50 is priced at Rs. 5,800 and supports 3G HSPA+ speeds of upto 14.4 Mbps download and 5.76 Mbps upload. It supports upto 5 simultaneous devices and comes handy when an individual wants to use single 3G connection for multiple devices. Also it is SIM locked which means it will work only with BSNL 3G and not on other networks and BSNL is offering a Plan Voucher of Rs. 60 with it which offers 1GB 3G Data.

The statement came from the telcos as the dispute over 3G Roaming pacts (ICRA) heads to the Supreme Court, after a two-member bench of the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) delivered a spited verdict on a petition challenging the Government’s order banning such 3G ICRA.
